It's Just For Fun Friday! On JFFF, we review items and activities that you can do with your kids in order to increase their cultural competence and diversity awareness. This is a new item everyone and I love it because it's one of those items that anyone can use - babies, kids, teens, adults. It's music! This is the Putumayo Kids CD Collection. It's a collection of CDs that highlights music around the world. Some of the CDs have songs from one region or country. Others are a mix (my personal favorite is World Playground). We have had a few of these CDs since my kiddos were wee little ones and have always enjoyed listening to them. They are great for when you want to have a rocking dance party (and who doesn't want to do that?!) or relax, wind down, and lull your little one off to sleep (also highly appealing). Older kids and teens can really examine the music itself and use these CDs to explore, or even create, music from all over. And don't fool yourself - adults will love these too. Yay! I am so book obsessed, I could easily do JFFF on books alone. In an effort to be inclusive, I do branch out. But if there was one item I had to focus on each time, books would definitely be it. And this week's book is special because it's by the sitting United States President. "Of Thee I Sing" is such a lovely book with really beautiful illustrations. And it highlights some of the people that made America what it is today. Some of the people you read about in every history book and some you never hear about. But every person is important and highlights a part of American culture that I think kids should know about. Your kids will learn some new people in American culture and there are so many different discussions you can have based on who was included in the book... and who wasn't. I love this week's item because it's perfect for a kid like me - or at least the kid I was. Nerdy, seriously nerdy. Do you remember these Brain Quests? They were stacks of questions. On the first page was a question and then the second page would tell you the answer. For the most part, these are designated by age, but this item is a little different from the others. It's all about a particular topic and that topic is Black History. An entire deck, front and back, of questions about Black History. I thought that was really cool because no matter how much you've learned about Black History, you're bound to learn something new. Your kids too! So use this deck when you guys are traveling, in a restaurant, basically anywhere where there is a lot of sitting and kids get bored easily. It'll keep them quiet (well, hopefully, I make no guarantees) and will get their brains moving as well. This week is a bit of a departure from the norm. We are not reviewing an item, instead we are talking about an upcoming holiday: Mother's Day! I like that we are trying something new here. We're using the holiday to talk about differences around the world and differences between different types of families. Not everyone celebrates Mother's Day in the same way. Not everyone even celebrates Mother's Day! So often, what we think of as typical or normal is anything but. In American culture, it's typical to bring mom flowers and go out for brunch. Is this the same for others? Use this holiday to learn something new with your kids!
