What We Do
Culturally Competent Kids is committed to helping parents and educators raise and shape children who will be ready to thrive in our ever-changing country and world. So often cultural competence paradigms are centered around teaching one group about another (i.e. teaching Caucasian people about Asian people; teaching straight people about sexual minorities). While these approaches do have an important place in cultural competence development, in her research and experience, Dr. Sweeney has found these paradigms limiting. Using data and information from the fields of psychology, neuroscience, and sociology, CCK presents a new way of thinking about cultural competence development. Each service is customized in order to produce the best possible results for an individual child, parent, organization or school. We strive to tailor our services to meet the needs of the individual or organization while still communicating essential information.
Below is a sample list of potential presentation and workshop topics. This is by no means an exhaustive list and additional topics are added all of the time. Any of these can be combined and altered in order to meet the needs of the group. Please contact us with any questions.
List of Sample Service Topics:
The meaning and impact of diversity on children
This presentation works to clarify what diversity is and its impact on a child's developing brain. It includes information about how diversity is encoded in the brain and primes children for interactions with others later on in their lives. Participants will walk away with a more complete understanding of what diversity is and how to integrate it into their own lives and the lives of others.
The connection between cultural competence and emotional growth
In recent years, there has been more attention paid to the emotional growth and development of children. We know more about how important it is, but how it is connected to culture and diversity? This presentation makes that connection and helps participants understand how they can help develop emotional growth through diversity for the children in their lives and for themselves.
How to raise a child in preparation for a diverse world
We all want to raise children who are happy, healthy, and successful. Being able to function in an ever-changing world is an important underlying component to all of these things. Applicable to parents, teachers, and caregivers, this presentation equips participants with information and tools to help children become lifelong learners of diversity and continue to develop cultural competence throughout their lives.
How to model appropriately for children
We now know that the saying "Do as I say, not as I do" does not work. Children are constantly observing the adults in their lives and emulating their behavior. This presentation can help adults better understand themselves and therefore convey a message to their children that is aligned with their values. Based in developing skills, participants will walk away with specific information and tips on how to get in touch with their own biases and subsequently, help the children in their lives.
The impact of diverse friendships
Having people around you who are different from you can have a powerful impact on one's cultural competence development. However, it is not as simple as having one friend who is a different race or ability level. It is about opening yourself up to embrace differences and to also share what is unique about you. This presentation will help participants walk away with specific ways to learn more from others around them while also sharing what is special about themselves.
