It's Just For Fun Friday! On JFFF, we review items and activities that you can do with your kids in order to increase their cultural competence and diversity awareness. This is a new item everyone and I love it because it's one of those items that anyone can use - babies, kids, teens, adults. It's music! This is the Putumayo Kids CD Collection. It's a collection of CDs that highlights music around the world. Some of the CDs have songs from one region or country. Others are a mix (my personal favorite is World Playground). We have had a few of these CDs since my kiddos were wee little ones and have always enjoyed listening to them. They are great for when you want to have a rocking dance party (and who doesn't want to do that?!) or relax, wind down, and lull your little one off to sleep (also highly appealing). Older kids and teens can really examine the music itself and use these CDs to explore, or even create, music from all over. And don't fool yourself - adults will love these too. After you watch the video, print out the page below for a quick reference guide on these CDs and suggestions for ways to use it (as if you need any for music!). There's also a link below to buy these CDs. Get one or explore them all! What songs did you gravitate towards? What do you think your child will enjoy? Most importantly, are you going to have a dance party?!?!? Leave a comment (or a video!) below. Most of all, enjoy. And don't forget to HAVE FUN!

It's Just For Fun Friday! On JFFF, we review items and activities that you can do with your kids in order to increase their cultural competence and diversity awareness. We're back to another book! Yay! I am so book obsessed, I could easily do JFFF on books alone. In an effort to be inclusive, I do branch out. But if there was one item I had to focus on each time, books would definitely be it. And this week's book is special because it's by the sitting United States President. "Of Thee I Sing" is such a lovely book with really beautiful illustrations. And it highlights some of the people that made America what it is today. Some of the people you read about in every history book and some you never hear about. But every person is important and highlights a part of American culture that I think kids should know about. Your kids will learn some new people in American culture and there are so many different discussions you can have based on who was included in the book... and who wasn't. After you watch the video, print out the page below for a quick reference guide on this activity and suggestions for ways to use it. There's also a link below to buy this fabulous book. How will you use this book? Have you read it before? What do you think your child's favorite person will be? Leave a comment below. Most of all enjoy the video. And don't forget to HAVE FUN!

It's Just For Fun Friday! On JFFF, we review items and activities that you can do with your kids in order to increase their cultural competence and diversity awareness. I love this week's item because it's perfect for a kid like me - or at least the kid I was. Nerdy, seriously nerdy. Do you remember these Brain Quests? They were stacks of questions. On the first page was a question and then the second page would tell you the answer. For the most part, these are designated by age, but this item is a little different from the others. It's all about a particular topic and that topic is Black History. An entire deck, front and back, of questions about Black History. I thought that was really cool because no matter how much you've learned about Black History, you're bound to learn something new. Your kids too! So use this deck when you guys are traveling, in a restaurant, basically anywhere where there is a lot of sitting and kids get bored easily. It'll keep them quiet (well, hopefully, I make no guarantees) and will get their brains moving as well. After you watch the video, print out the page below for a quick reference guide on this activity and suggestions for ways to use it. There's also a link below to buy this very cool Brain Quest. Will you use this deck with your kids? With them or on their own? What is the coolest thing that you or your kids learned about Black History? Leave a comment below. Most of all enjoy the video. And don't forget to HAVE FUN!

It's Just For Fun Friday! On JFFF, we review items and activities that you can do with your kids in order to increase their cultural competence and diversity awareness. This week is a bit of a departure from the norm. We are not reviewing an item, instead we are talking about an upcoming holiday: Mother's Day! I like that we are trying something new here. We're using the holiday to talk about differences around the world and differences between different types of families. Not everyone celebrates Mother's Day in the same way. Not everyone even celebrates Mother's Day! So often, what we think of as typical or normal is anything but. In American culture, it's typical to bring mom flowers and go out for brunch. Is this the same for others? Use this holiday to learn something new with your kids! After you watch the video, print out the page below for a quick reference guide on how to think and talk about Mother's Day with your kids to develop diversity awareness. How do you celebrate Mother's Day (if at all)? Is there anything new and interesting that you want to try to help celebrate? Leave a comment below. Most of all enjoy the video. And don't forget to HAVE FUN!

It's Just For Fun Friday! On JFFF, we review items and activities that you can do with your kids in order to increase their cultural competence and diversity awareness. This week's item is so great because it's for kids who like to run around with their toys, create things, and go on adventures. These historical action figures certainly fit the bill. They are for any kid who enjoys playing with action figures; they don't need to be old enough to really understand the historical significance behind them. They just need to not be putting everything into their mouths anymore (a phase that can last much too long *sigh*). Once your kid is older and enjoys learning about history (if they are nerdy like me), you can say, "Remember that toy you've been playing with since you were 4? Well, let me tell you more about who that really is..." So I feel that this item can be enjoyed in stages and at so many ages. After you watch the video, print out the page below for a quick reference guide on how to use the action figures to develop diversity awareness. There's also a link below to buy the toys or download the teaching guide. How will you use these figures based on your child's age? Which one does your child seem to enjoy the most? Will you use the teaching guide? Leave a comment below. Most of all enjoy the video. And don't forget to HAVE FUN!

It's Just For Fun Friday! On JFFF, we review items and activities that you can do with your kids in order to increase their cultural competence and diversity awareness. This item is for those kids who love to draw - kids who are artsy. I would not say that I was an artsy kid growing up, but I really loved to draw (poorly) and I think that a lot of kids do. If your kid enjoys chilling out with some markers and a piece of paper (or the wall, whatever) then I've got the perfect thing for you. Like many other markers, these are washable. Unlike many other markers, they represent a range of skin tones: Crayola Washable Multicultural Markers. How cool is that? Check out the video for tips on how to use them then go create something really cool with your artsy kid. After you watch the video, print out the page below for a quick reference guide on how to use the markers to develop diversity awareness. There's also a link below to buy the markers (or colored pencils if you prefer). How will you use these markers? Do you see your child using them to draw different shades of people or will you have to model it? How else might you use these besides just people? Leave a comment below. Most of all enjoy the video. And don't forget to HAVE FUN!

Welcome back to Just For Fun Friday! On JFFF, we review items and activities that you can do with your kids in order to increase their cultural competence and diversity awareness. This item is for when you just want, no make that need, to get something done. Sometimes you just have to use the TV - nothing else will stop your kids from running laps around the house. So why not give them a show that is engaging, fun, and teaches them about diversity? The Doc is a favorite in our house. I focus on one particular episode, which is available for purchase below, but the entire Doc McStuffins series can teach your kids something about diversity. So turn on the tube and let them watch a few - guilt-free. After you watch the video, print out the page below for a quick reference guide on how to use the TV series, and this episode in particular, to develop diversity awareness. There's also a link below to buy the episode if you want to add it to your collection. What did you say to your kids about Wildlife Will? What will be the next Doc episode that you watch with your kids? Leave a comment below. Most of all enjoy the video. And don't forget to HAVE FUN!
